Product Info

With its rusty, brown-red coloring, Burnt Sienna slate is the perfect hardy stone to bring warmth to your interior. Taking its name from the ancient pigment used by artists for centuries, it is rich and exotic. Each tile has a natural color variation, some are dark toned with slight patches of gray, others are bright red with a subtle mottled effect. Each tile is different from the next in texture and pattern, but the big picture reveals a consistent warm tone throughout. Burnt Sienna is the ultimate in homely, traditional interiors.

Slate is a suitably hard and durable stone that has been used to create sturdy tiles for centuries. It is formed under the earth's surface when clay and other minerals are subjected to certain pressure and temperature conditions. The soft material transforms over time into a solid rock. Slate is not easily molded to shape, but its formation into natural layers means it can be easily cleaved along its fault lines into slabs.

Slate is also used as a roofing tile, evidence of its ability to resist the elements. Its durability is almost unmatched in nature, and it can easily cope with the high levels of traffic that may be seen in hallways and kitchens of busy family homes. It is slightly porous, meaning that it must be sealed with a stone protector post-installation. However, this creates enough moisture resistance to make it suitable for use in areas where there is water, such as external patios.

When slate is cleaved along its natural fault lines, the slabs of rock have a ridged texture to them. This is known as a natural cleft face and retains the stone's grooves and bumps. The effect is an authentic looking slate, organic and rustic.

It is a great finish in terms of durability and functionality. The riven surface gives the tile grip, making it great for areas where water is likely to fall, which would make some finishes become incredibly slippery. It's also ideal in terms of its resistance to wear and tear. The natural texture of the stone is not ruined by heavy use, in fact, it gives the stone a worn-in look which adds to its rustic charm.

The back of the tile is left ungauged. This means the tiles can differ in thickness slightly. This adds to its authenticity; the natural origins of the slate are obvious, and the stone appears rugged and earthy. While an ungauged back is more suitable for external uses, it can also be used inside the home with the correct application.

Give your garden year-round warmth by creating your patio using Burnt Sienna slate. The red hues contrast beautifully with lush green planting. Add warm-toned florals to offset the sun-like colors within the stone. Build your fire pit or outside kitchen using Burnt Sienna slate and you'll have that summer heat all through the evening.
