30 x 60 PORCELAIN TILE – STYLE AND DURABILITY

Porcelain is a type of ceramic that has been fired at a higher temperature. This produces a denser more hard-wearing tile that is ideal for use all around the home, but a particularly robust option for flooring. 

Thanks to their low porosity, they provide slip resistance and stain resistance, so ideal for kitchen backsplashes of enthusiastic cooks. It is often freeze resistant meaning you can use many of our 30 x 60 porcelain tile options outdoors, for a grand marble-look pool surround or contemporary concrete-look patio. The low porosity means it doesn’t readily absorb moisture, and as such keeps the growth of slippery mosses at bay.

Our 30 x 60 porcelain tiles are also available in several finishes including polished for a pristine, glassy look; honed and lappato finishes for a softer sheen that diffuses light gently across the surface; and matte for high-traction subtlety.

The number of 30 x 60 tiles per box varies according to the manufacturer. Across our range most boxes are available in 2, 4 or 6, however others are available in single boxes, or boxes of three. We recommend careful planning before you buy. Think about the layout and the effect you want, then measure your space and calculate how many tiles you need to achieve the best result.

Opt for 10–15% extra to allow for breakages, and to choose the best-looking tiles where the tiles are real stone. Variations are natural and sometimes there can just be that one tile that is too sparse, or too overburdened with pattern, to be a good aesthetic fit with the rest of the selection. Having a few extra tiles allows you to lay out your tile in a mockup to see which tile looks best and where.

HOW TO INSTALL 30 x 60 TILE? 

Installing any large format tile can be a job for two people, and installing 30 x 60 tiles, we would recommend hiring professionals with the large-scale tools needed for the project. However, if you are doing this as a home DIY project, the process is identical to laying any standard size tile. But do take time to prepare the surface well as any gaps, holes or dips will weaken the bond these large heavy tiles need to fix securely to the wall or floor. 

Use a medium-bed mortar that is designed for heavier or large format tiles as this provides a thicker bed for the tile. Use an appropriately sized trowel such as a ½” notch trowel to spread mortar on both the surface and the back of the tile to ensure a secure bond. A tile this size, and with a substantial amount of mortar used, needs a long time to set. Leave the tiles to dry for 36-48 hours and avoid walking on the surface. Once grouted, avoid heavy foot traffic for a week.

HOW MANY 30 x 60 TILES ARE NEEDED FOR A SHOWER STALL?

You need to measure the space to see how much tile, in 30 x 60, shower stalls and their surround might need. The rectangular nature of this tile dimension means that it can be arranged horizontally or vertically in panels to accommodate the space however looks best.

An average walk-in shower measures 30 x 60 which makes this size of large format tile ideal for this project. On the longest wall you can use three full length panels horizontally with a fourth cut lengthwise to fill the remaining space. Keeping the horizontal lines in harmony, the narrowest wall would need three half panels (measuring 30 x 30) and a fourth cut to size – so two panels altogether. Overall, six 30 x 60 tiles should cover a shower stall of this size. 

For a successful result, carefully measure your space and plan to scale. This allows you to see if the layout you want works, and to calculate the amount of tile you need. It is always advised to order extra tile as unfortunately accidents can happen. 

HOW MANY TILES ARE IN A 30 x 60 BOX?
