  • 31 x 31 TILES – A VERSATILE LARGE FORMAT

At the smaller end of the large format tile spectrum 31 x 31 tiles are large enough to easily fill a large room, but not so big that they overwhelm a smaller one. Their smaller size makes them a little more versatile than larger tiles when it comes to layout options. With more tiles per length or width of the room, there is more opportunity to be creative with layout. Arranging the tiles in a classic linear grid pattern is still possible, but in addition to offset running bond patterns, the tiles can also be rotated to be arranged on a diagonal in diamond checkerboard pattern. Not only does this add visual interest to plain tiles, but it also has the effect of widening the room.

Our concrete 31 x 31 tiles can be used anywhere around the home or outside and can even withstand freezing temperatures. They look fantastic laid out as a patio for a modern hit of style that goes well with a minimalist garden scheme and contemporary architecture. While the lighter tones of pale gray and ivory look light and bright in the sun, the darker grays and deep taupe make a beautiful contrast with the surrounding green foliage.

MEDIUM SIZED TILES – CHOOSE THE RIGHT TILE FOR THE AVAILABLE SPACE

Medium sized tiles are usually around the 12"–14" mark, and this is where we enter the muddy waters of where medium tiles end and large format begin. Generally, large format begins once a tile has one width or length greater than 15", although some believe it to be 12”. One thing we can say with certainty is that 12-inch tiles are among the most popular for flooring.

Crucially, medium sized tiles are a manageable size for home DIYers with basic tools yet are substantial enough to cover a good amount of ground easily. For tiling a large space with these tiles, you can choose grout colors a shade lighter or darker than the tile itself to blend in and make the space feel even larger, as the grout lines are less pronounced.

STANDARD-SIZED SQUARE TILES ARE DIY DREAMS

8-, 6-, 4- and 2-inch tiles are the standard-sized square tiles that are widely available to choose from. These are the smaller tiles that we more commonly think of when talking about tiling and are easier to tackle for the novice DIYer. There is a greater flexibility with this size of tile, suiting smaller spaces like bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes. There is also greater scope for introducing color and pattern. These aspects make it easier to inject personality into a home, as you are almost guaranteed to find a tile that dazzles—one that says something about you.

Standard-sized tiles can still be used for flooring in more intricate designs like patchwork and hopscotch formations. These layouts work well both indoors and outdoors, adding some visual interest to an otherwise blank canvas and suiting more traditional themes.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL 31 x 31 TILES?

Any large format tiles can be fitted following the same principles as fitting smaller tiles. The main consideration is safe handling to avoid breakages and ensuring a strong bond to hold the tiles in place.  To handle the tiles safely, use suction cups and consider getting someone to help you. 31 x 31 tiles can be tricky to maneuver and are easier to lower in place with two people. To make sure the bond between tile and surface is strong by using a 3/8” or ½” notched trowel and a medium-bed mortar. This mortar helps to compensate for irregularities in the tile and the surface, ensuring a secure fix for the tile.

WHAT TYPE OF TILES COME IN 31 x 31 TILES?

Our range of 31 x 31 tiles are made from porcelain and come in a contemporary concrete-look matte finish that works well for minimalist and industrial themes. There is a good selection of gray, beige, and taupe toned options that will work with any color scheme.

    IS 31 x 31 A POPULAR SIZE FOR TILES?

31 x 31 is one of the less common sizes of tile but these concrete-look tiles are incredibly popular, widely appreciate for their hybrid rustic-industrial appearance and application in any room in the home and externally.
