In fact, travertine actually has a similar geology to its creamy cousin, the primary difference being its creation under fast-moving water such as a hot spring. It is the gasses that are caught in the stone, caused by the rapid movement, which result in the tiny pits and holes that can be seen littered across travertine's surface.
