  • LARGE FORMAT TRAVERTINE TILE – SOFT HUES AND ELEGANT FORMS

If you want a stylish stone that is durable, long lasting, and can stand up to the challenges of a busy home and all the footfall it brings, you will find so much to appreciate in our range of large format travertine tile. Choose from honed, tumbled, polished and brushed finishes, among others, to refine your design scheme.

Suited to many uses around the home travertine is a strong stone originating from the limestone family of sedimentary rocks. Use it as a backsplash in a kitchen or bathroom, thanks to its moisture resistance. Create a panorama of gorgeous flooring, laying this outstanding tile across your floors. Or build a patio in the garden, where its mellow earthy tones will fit in effortlessly with the flora and fauna around it.

Large format travertine tiles marry the sandy tones of limestone and sandstone with the visual interest of marble. Glowing beiges, ivory, and lemon hues to defined brown, taupe, and radiant gold; we have options with low variation and high variation color to blend in with your scheme, or grab attention, as much as you like.

HOW TO TILE LARGE FORMAT TRAVERTINE ON WALL – A STEP BY STEP GUIDE

One of the first questions an ambitious DIYer might ask is how to tile large format travertine on walls. Indeed, the principle is not so different to standard sized tile although more care and attention needs to be placed on lifting and handling.

    1. Make sure the surface is smooth and level. Fill in any holes. It is important that there are no gaps between the wall and the tile as it would weaken the bond.
    2. Find the center of your wall and lay out the tile on the floor in your chosen arrangement. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, it allows you to make sure the layout leaves no awkward cuts at either end of the wall. Secondly, as travertine is a natural stone and one tile can differ greatly in color or pattern from the next within the same range, it allows you to see where dark, light or densely patterned tiles may be clumped together. If it is a large project with several boxes, open two or three at a time, picking and choosing from each as you go so that you are happy with the overall effect.
    3. With large format travertine tiles it is important that there is a full bed of adhesive between the tile and the wall. Spread adhesive thickly onto the wall with the flat side of a notched trowel before combing the notched edge of the trowel through. Butter the back of each tile before pressing firmly into place. Add spacers and repeat with the remaining tiles. Depending on the size and weight of the of the large format travertine tile, having another helper, and lifting and carrying the tile with suction cups may be beneficial.
    4. Once the tile has set – this can take up to two days - fill in the joints with grout using a rubber float, pressing in the grout as deeply as possible to fill the holes well.
    5. Leave the grout to dry for up to thirty minutes before wiping away excess from the surface of the tiles with a damp cloth. It is important not to allow it to dry on, as it is difficult to remove, once hardened, without scraping and scratching the tile.

HOW TO TILE LARGE FORMAT TRAVERTINE ON WALL

There are lots of ways to tile large format travertine on walls. The application of the tile itself is not too different from laying standard sized tiles. And the choice of pattern can be just as impactful. In the same way you would choose a layout for flooring, or a standard tile backsplash, it is no different for large fromat tiles on a wall. Large format is a chance to make a statement in your room; make the most of the opportunity to display it to full effect with a striking linear arrangement or an interesting hopscotch pattern.

WHAT ARE THE SIZES OF TRAVERTINE?

Our travertine sizes range from as small as 2” x 4” all the way up to 24” x 48” and every possible size in between. Some of our travertines are available in broad ranges of sizes giving you more creative scope for choosing your layout.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF TRAVERTINE?

Travertine shares a lot of advantages with other stone in that it is durable and easy to maintain. It is moisture resistant which makes it harder for mold and mildew to form in wet, steamy rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom.
