Subway Tiles

Subway tile was originally developed for and used on the walls of New York City’s Subway stations at the beginning of the 20th century. With its pencil-thin grout lines, flat surface, and coved corners, it was easy to clean and to remove graffiti, so it got the name "sanitary-ware." The aesthetic of subway tile embodied the clean and sanitized sensibilities of the Victorian era, so soon it became popular throughout the USA in both commercial spaces and residential housing.
