What Is a Sandstone Tile?
Sandstone tiles are crafted from sturdy rock that is formed by sediment build-up over thousands of years. For a natural rock, sandstone is relatively soft and easy to shape. This, coupled with its durable and versatile nature, makes sandstone ideal for tiles. We recommend having your sandstone tiles sealed occasionally to prevent moisture damage.
What Are Sandstone Tiles Best Used For?
Sandstone tiles are great for flooring and walls, kitchen backsplashes, or fireplace surrounds. Because of the porous nature of the stone, we wouldn’t recommend it for use in a shower room or bathroom. Sandstone tiles come in a wide variety of finishes and colors, with natural cleft-face styles available that blend highly pigmented color with a rough, hewn exterior ideal for cladding or exterior use.
Which Finishes Are Available for Sandstone Tiles?
Stone & Tile Shoppe stocks sandstone tiles in a variety of different finishes to suit your design aesthetic, including:
- Honed: A silky smooth honed finish is created by grinding down the stone to remove its top layer, revealing a satin, matte finish. Honed tiles are slip resistant and durable enough for kitchen and bathroom flooring
- Natural cleft face: A natural cleft face occurs when the stone is split into shape, creating a rough and uneven finish with unique pits, bumps, and grooves. This finish is ideal for driveways and backyards due to its texture and slip resistance
- Chiseled: Relatively flat and with a riven surface, chiseled tiles have horizontal grooves across the stone for a beautifully textured and rugged look. The rough surface has good slip resistance and durability while providing a great design feature for your accent walls and backsplashes
- Polished: A high-shine finish that is perfect for adding interest to kitchen splashbacks, fireplaces, and wall features.
