What Is a Travertine Tile?

Similar in composition to limestone, travertine is created by mineral deposits forming in layers underwater over a long period of time. Travertine is known for its tiny pits and holes. These are caused by bubbles of gas that naturally occur in the fast-moving stream or hot spring in which travertine forms. This natural stone comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, from beautifully layered silver tiles with rich strands of brown, cream and charcoal gray to rich coppery bronze tiles with veins of cream and gold.
