What Is a Travertine Tile?
Similar in composition to limestone, travertine is created by mineral deposits forming in layers underwater over a long period of time. Travertine is known for its tiny pits and holes. These are caused by bubbles of gas that naturally occur in the fast-moving stream or hot spring in which travertine forms. This natural stone comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, from beautifully layered silver tiles with rich strands of brown, cream and charcoal gray to rich coppery bronze tiles with veins of cream and gold.
What Are Travertine Tiles Best Used For?
Travertine tiles are incredibly durable, making them suitable for a wide range of home improvement projects, including flooring, countertops, walls and backsplashes, and exterior living spaces. For countertops and backsplashes, we recommend the Turco Classico Travertine, with its beautiful beige and cream layered pattern and polished, glossy finish. For flooring, the Walnut Travertine Tile, with its demure charm and honed finish provides an earthy, natural look and sufficient non-slip resistance.
Which Finishes Are Available for Slate Tiles?
Stone & Tile Shoppe stocks slate tiles in a variety of different finishes to suit your design aesthetic, including:
- Honed: A silky smooth honed finish is created by grinding down the stone to remove its top layer, revealing a satin, matte finish. Honed tones are slip resistant and durable enough for kitchen and bathroom flooring
- Tumbled: A naturally pitted surface and worn edge give an aged appearance that is ideal for rustic kitchen and exterior flooring
- Chiseled & Brushed: A chiseled edge and brushed finish gives these tiles their aged and antique look. They are brushed with wire bristles to create a slightly textured and worn effect that’s ideal for vintage flooring
- Brushed: A matte, naturally worn-down effect is created by sweeping the stone with a wire brush. This provides you with a low-maintenance tile that is easy to clean and fairly slip resistant, making it ideal for use in kitchens or hallways.
