SQUARE TILES – RELIABLE DESIGN

Square tiles bring a regularity and rhythm to your room design, creating a structured bed for the rest of a room’s theme when used for flooring, and a restful backdrop on walls and backsplashes elsewhere with easy to look at arrangements that are both classic and timeless.

Arrange square tiles in a linear run, in the most classic grid formation, for a pattern that is restful and undemanding. It can be a good choice of layout for a short wide room where you want to create an illusion of length, as the uniform grout lines will carry the eye through the room, giving an impression of distance and flow.

Square tile can also be offset by either a half, or a third, to create an optical illusion of greater width in a room. The interest created by the breaks in the tile shortens our perception of the space, bringing the farthest wall further in.

STANDARD-SIZED TILES – AND THEIR NON-STANDARD COUNTERPARTS

Many of our options are the familiar standard-sized tiles, that make planning a layout quick and simple with their predictable formats in multiples of 4” and 6”. In practical terms the difference between standard and non-standard sizing is minimal, as every room is unique, not all walls run straight and cuts are inevitable, so there is no reason to shy away from these stunning options. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO LAY 39 x 39 TILES? 

Once you have identified what layout you would like to use, find the center of the floor or wall and lay out the tile in a mock-up to make sure that the gaps you are left with at the edges of the wall, floor or splashback are balanced. 

Prepare the surface and fill any holes as best you can and then spread a medium set mortar with a notched trowel. For large tiles it is important to back-butter the tile. This ensures maximum coverage to compensate for any shrinkage as the mortar dries. 

Press the tile in firmly so that the ridges collapse and mortar pushes out at the sides. Apply spacers before continuing with the rest of the tiles. Leave to dry thoroughly for up to two days before grouting.

ARE 39 x 39 TILES POPULAR? 

These are one of the less common tile sizes, but they are nonetheless popular thanks to the exquisite finishes available in this size. It’s a practical large format tile size that works well both as flooring and backsplashes in kitchens and bathrooms.  

HOW DO YOU CUT 39 x 39 TILES?

All our 39 x 39 tiles are currently made of porcelain so you can cut these tiles with a tile cutter suited to large format tiles such as a tile saw or a cantilever manual tile cutter. Large format tiles are costly so remember to always mark both ends and check your measurements twice, to make sure you will score along the right line.
