ARE 39 x 59 TILES A POPULAR SIZE? 

This size is one of our less common sizes, but it has a versatile shape that makes for attractive layouts in the home. This large rectangle is a great shape and size for covering large areas while offering the opportunity to play with layout across a large space such as flooring.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL 39 x 59 TILES?

As with any tile the most important thing to do is make sure that the surface is level with no holes. As there is no flexibility in tiles it is important to make sure that the bedding surface is level to ensure a strong bond with no weak spots. 

Use the straight edge of a notched trowel to spread mortar on the surface, before combing back over with the notched edge to make furrows in the mortar. Then back butter the rear of the tile before lowering it into place. Use spacers between tiles and repeat the process until complete. Leave the adhesive mortar to dry.

With the thicker spread of mortar required, leave at least 36 hours to dry before applying grout with a rubber float, pressing firmly into the joints.

WHAT’S THE SIZE TROWEL YOU NEED FOR 39 x 59 TILES? 

Trowel size always comes down to the principle of whether the tile is getting adequate mortar coverage. For large format tiles use a ½” square notch trowel. It can be an idea to check how much coverage a tile is getting. 

When you lay the first tile, lift it up again to check that the back is still well covered with mortar. Dry areas need a minimum of 85% coverage and wet areas, such as showers, or real stone tiles, need at least 95%.
