Large format satin tiles have a soft luster that brings a warmth and subtle elegance to a room. In practical terms the finish offers a less reflective surface which can hide a multitude of sins. Like matte tile, satin tiles don’t show smudges and marks so readily, so a strict regimen of cleaning and polishing isn’t required. Satin finish is also a great choice for bathrooms and showers as it hides splashes and dried water droplets better than polished tile which keeps your areas looking pristine for longer.

SATIN SMOOTH AND MATTE LARGE FORMAT TILES FOR A PLAIN AND SIMPLE SCHEME

In these cases, opt for satin smooth and matte large format tiles for the ideal backsplash or floor, a perfectly elegant yet undemanding backdrop to other aesthetics. 

While a matte finish reflects no light and creates a subdued understated look, satin has a slight sheen that amplifies the simplicity of an unpatterned tile, giving a plain feature just enough magic to complement a more elaborate theme.

WHAT ARE LARGE FORMAT SATIN TILES? 

The term large format is used to describe tiles at the larger end of the scale and usually considered to be a tile with at least one side measuring 12”-15” inches or more. Large format satin tiles are these larger scale tiles with a satin finish, meaning that the surface has been polished but with fewer wheels than for a polished tile creating a silky smooth finish. The result is a happy medium between matte and polished that has a delicate sheen.

ARE LARGE FORMAT SATIN SLIPPERY TILES?

Large format satin tiles offer better traction in wet areas than glossy or polished finishes. However if you want to remove the risk of slippage, you may prefer a honed or matte finish tile as the fractionally less even surface offers more minuscule open pockets of tile to provide better grip.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL LARGE FORMAT SATIN FINISH TILES? 

You can install large format satin tiles the same way you would lay any other large format tile. Safety and precaution are watchwords when installing large tiles. Make sure you wear safety gloves and use suction cups to lift and maneuver each tile, with the help of another person with any of our largest tiles.

The laying surface always needs to be level and smooth. You can do this by repairing any dips and holes or by affixing an underlayment – a rigid level surface that promises close adhesion. Smooth adhesive mortar onto the wall or floor with the flat edge of a notched edge trowel, before smoothing again with the notched edge to create ridges. Bear in mind that the size of trowel needed varies as tile dimensions increase, to create wider ridges that aid bonding.

Lift the tile into place using suction cups, press firmly so that mortar begins to emerge from around the edges of the tile, then scrape away the excess and insert spacers before repeating with the other tiles. When the tile has set, apply grout deep into the joints and up to the face level of the tile. Leave for fifteen minutes before wiping over with a damp cloth to remove any traces of grout on the tiles themselves, before it hardens.
