    • CONCRETE LOOK SUBWAY TILE – INDUSTRIAL BEAUTY

    At the heart of the industrial trend is the concrete subway tile. Adaptable in shape and color, these tiles can be used on both walls and floors. The striking appearance of the industrial aesthetic is suited to both residential and commercial design. A concrete look subway can add discreet variation with its monochrome finishes, that works well in elegant restaurants and upmarket bars. There is something particularly enthralling about this stark design scheme that is attractive despite its austere, utilitarian appearance.

    On first impression, it would seem cold and uninviting for a bathroom, but in actual fact the palest of tiles with a smooth finish has a delicate appeal. Reinforce the industrial theme with black powder-coated fittings and modern fixtures with clean lines. It is still possible to add other hues for dimension, but for an industrial aesthetic, these should be sparingly.  A lightly varnished pale oak sink cabinet would add a hint of richness while keeping the look linear and modern. If you dare to add anything more, you can accent the scheme with the selective placement of brushed stainless steel to complement the colorway while adding some gentle reflection.

    You will find softer interpretations of this trend in Scandinavian and Japanese inspired themes. In fact, a subset of the minimalist scheme fuses these themes together, bringing us ‘Japandi’. The appeal of Japandi is the mixture of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese simplicity. The result is artful, restful, and surprisingly serene. It is a good look for a large living room where a concrete look subway tile wall makes a striking backdrop for a fireplace. In the Japandi tradition this is married with soft minimalist textiles in lighter neutrals.

    The fundamental trick to accomplishing a strong look that still brings some home comfort is lighting. Well-chosen down lights for mellow, diffuse light illuminate in just the right places to avoid stark glare that would over-toughen the effect of the gray tile. The aim is to create an aesthetic of ordered, streamlined, minimalism, yet one with some soul.

    ARE CONCRETE LOOK SUBWAY TILES POPULAR?

    The industrial trend has been around for quite some. Its minimalist aesthetic is popular, with its crisp lines and blue-gray tones. The concrete look tiles bring a calming look to interiors thanks to their undemanding lines and soothing color. As with all trends, they evolve and grow, so now we see the tiles being absorbed into other aesthetics, fusing with harmonious trends like Scandinavian and contemporary.

    ARE CONCRETE LOOK SUBWAY TILE HEAVIER THAN NORMAL TILE? 

    Concrete look subway tiles are no heavier than a normal tile as they are mostly made from ceramic or porcelain. If the tiles were made from concrete, they would be much heavier. If weight is a consideration for your project, you will find that ceramic tiles are lighter than porcelain as they are less dense and more porous.

    HOW DO YOU INSTALL A CONCRETE LOOK SUBWAY TILE?

    As they are made mostly from ceramic or porcelain, they are installed in the same way: fixed to the wall in the desired layout using adhesive. Then, once the tiles are set, the look can be finished by grouting the lines between the tiles.
