Product Info

California Gold is a colorful blend of gold, red, and gray. It is a melting pot of colors, reminiscent of a watercolor painting, a beautiful display by nature. It has a completely non-uniform pattern, some tiles appear almost totally orange, with only a light speckle of gray, others have a metallic background with golden tones marbling its surface like a spilled paint pot. It is a totally unique design, a nod to its earthy, organic origins.

Slate is created when layers of clay and other minerals are subjected to a change in pressure and temperature under the surface of the earth. The metamorphic process produces a solid, hardened rock which has natural fault lines along its layers. This means it can be easily cleaved into slabs ready for use as tiles.

Slate is a great stone for a busy family household. It is one of the hardest stones on the market meaning that it has the durability to stand up to almost any application. It has often been used to protect buildings from the elements as a roof tile. It is fairly scratch and crack resistant, making it ideal for use in kitchens. Once the stone has been sealed with a proper protectant, it is moisture resistant and is ideal for bathrooms or other areas of the home that are likely to see water.

In keeping with the stone's earthy origins, this tile has a natural cleft face. This is achieved by splitting the stone along its fault lines, resulting in a tile with grooves, ridges, and bumps. The tile is level and not sharp, but there is a natural, riven texture to it.

As well as creating a rugged design, ideal for traditional style homes, a natural cleft face is also incredibly practical. Whereas some finishes can become incredibly slippery when wet, a cleft face has a grip to it which helps to prevent skids, creating a functional flooring tile. For this reason, it is often used for outside applications such as garden patios and porches. However, it can also be used inside the home for kitchens and bathrooms that are also likely to see water.

In terms of durability, a natural cleft face takes pole position. The rugged surface is not easily worn down or damaged by high levels of footfall. Instead, over time the finish only appears more worn-in, blending beautifully with its natural design. It is a great finish for high-traffic areas of the home such as hallways for this very reason.

California Gold creates a beautiful country-inspired kitchen. Take your home back to the traditional with wooden furniture and kitchen cupboards, paired with neutral creamy walls. Just add your own rich soft furnishings for the ultimate in homely design. Snuggle up with a patchwork quilt and log fire for relaxation defined.
