HOW TO INSTALL 24 x 48 TILE ON A WALL? 

The wall should be even without cracks and dips. Prepare the wall either by filling and smoothing or using an underlayment. Apply two layers of adhesive mortar onto the back of the tile. This is known as back-buttering and helps to create a strong bond between the tile and the surface. Spread adhesive on the wall with the straight edge of a trowel and then smooth with the notched edge to create ridges. 

Use suction cups to lift the tile into place, before pressing firmly to embed the tile into the adhesive. Put spacers in place and then use a tile alignment instrument to maneuver tiles closer together. Wipe the tile surface clean of adhesive. Once fixed in place, apply grout up to the same level as the tile surface. Wipe excess grout away with a damp cloth and leave to dry.

HOW TO CUT 24 x 48 TILE

Lift the tile onto a worksurface using suction cups and wipe with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Carefully measure and mark your cutting line. For large format porcelain tiles you can use a free cut cutting machine. Score over the marked and measured line. Move the slab over the edge of the table, then use a breaker to snap into the tile. 

Lift the tile using suction cups and place a metal pin (rod) under it. The tile should give way along the scored line, but you can apply gentle pressure either side if required. Always wear a mask to protect yourself from breathing in dust.

SHOULD YOU USE UNDERLAYMENT ON 24 x 48 TILE? 

A surface can be prepared for tiling with hole-filling and smoothing, but the advantage with underlayments is that they are perfectly smooth and flat. Using an underlayment such as backerboard for preparing a wall or floor for tiling has the benefit of creating a perfectly rigid surface for tile adhesion, removing the risk of gaps, or movement, beneath the tiles causing grout lines to crumble or tiles to crack.
