    • LARGE FORMAT SLATE TILE – SURPRISE YOURSELF WITH THE POSSIBILITIES

    Slate is a high-quality durable choice for your home and is so versatile in its uses. It creates a sharp looking backsplash for a kitchen or a bathroom, its dark, metallic hues making it an ideal companion for a crossover natural-industrial theme. Choose from honed or unpolished, natural finishes to expand your options.

    Large format slate tiles are a great choice for flooring in high-traffic areas as they are naturally resistant to breaking and scratching. In choosing a large format tile, and reducing grout lines, you can create a stylish floor choice that is even easier to care for. Slate also radiates heat well, and as such is a stunning and practical choice for underfloor heating.

    The sultry dark blue-gray of traditional natural slate is often the first image that springs to mind when we think of slate tiles. However, slate can be so much more complex than that. Our range of large format slate tiles includes some of the most striking variegations on the market, that will gift you a multitude of nuances to work with in your color scheme. You will find metallic grays with burnished copper highlights and pale slates with dabs and whispers of gold. These eye-catching tiles are sure to set your imagination alight.

    Our longest large format slate tile is available as a square is a substantial 24”x24”, however if you need a larger option that still offers a slate look, try our 31” x 31” options in our large format porcelain tile range.

    LARGE FORMAT GREEN SLATE TILE – A SOPHISTICATED TWIST

    In addition to our stunning plain gray and variegated slates, we have an enticing selection of large format green slate tiles. From an almost solid matte green to hints of leaf tones with golden shimmers these dark tiles reveal a hint of woodland from within their charcoal depths. It brings a rich and festive element, and a pleasant twist to the dark undertones we have come to expect from slate. 

    Green slate tiles are a good way to layer natural elements and colors around your room if you are going for an inspired-by-nature theme. A variegated green tile with brassy hues will work well with wood cabinetry or worktops, and a complementary splashback to create an earthy vibe in a kitchen or bathroom. These tiles can also look fabulous in a garden for a patio that blends easily into its surroundings.

    Large format green slate tiles also make a stunning choice for a mudroom or entryway. Their solid nature is durable, yet the texture and color variations add interest and a less austere welcome than some other dark tiles.

    HOW DO YOU LAY LARGE FORMAT TILES IN SLATE?

    Prepare the substrate by fixing cement board sheets in place. These help to protect the floor beneath where the tile will go. Then lay out your tile in a dry run to ensure you have the layout you like. Use a cement-based adhesive to spread beneath where the tile will go, using the notched edge to make grooves for better adhesion. 

    Place the tile in place with enough pressure to collapse the grooves but not so much that the tile presses into the cement board. Place spacers and continue until your floor is complete. If you spill adhesive on the tile, wipe with a damp cloth as you go, as once dried it is difficult to remove without damaging the tile. 

    Once you have three tiles laid, place a piece of wood across and tamp down with a rubber mallet to ensure all the tiles are level with each other. Allow at least a day and a half for the mortar to dry before laying grout, using a rubber float to press the grout down deep into the gaps between tiles. Wipe away excess before it has chance to dry in.

    WHERE CAN YOU LAY A LARGE FORMAT SLATE TILE? 

    You can lay a large format slate tile just about anywhere. Exterior, flooring, backsplashes, and walls—any room can benefit from the unique, natural charm these tiles bring. With so many shades and finishes available it will be difficult not to find the perfect match for your scheme.

    WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A LARGE FORMAT SLATE TILE? 

    Practically speaking, large format tiles are great for large areas, as they allow you to cover more space in a shorter time. From a design perspective they give the space greater visual continuity as there are fewer grout lines to break up the flow. Large format slate tiles can also be used in smaller rooms, as the continuity can make the room feel larger.
