WHAT TYPE OF ROCK IS GRANITE?

Granite is a type of igneous rock that has been formed inside plutons, or magma chambers underground and cooled slowly over time so that visible crystals form inside the stone.

WHAT IS GRANITE?

Granite is a form of igneous rock which forms beneath the surface of the Earth and which features large visible crystals. Rather than being a single mineral, granite is composed of multiple minerals and it contains up to four different colors due to the quartz grains it contains. Mica is one of the minerals that granite contains. Due to its reflective properties it can cause granite to sparkle in sunlight. 

HOW TO CUT GRANITE COUNTERTOP

The simplest and most effective way to cut granite countertops at home is to use a wet circular handheld saw. This tool is suitable for cutting slabs of granite measuring up to ten feet in length. Usually, granite countertops measure no more than 5-10 feet in length. Wet saws will feed water onto the surface to ensure optimal lubrication for the blade as it cuts through this natural stone material. 

HOW TO CARE FOR GRANITE COUNTERTOPS

It’s crucial to ensure that your granite countertops have been properly sealed before use. Once this has been done, you’ll find it surprisingly easy to care for them on a daily basis. All you need to do is dust down the surface regularly with a soft cloth, or wipe it with a solution of mild soap and water, or even plain water. If the countertop requires a little extra cleaning, you should use a neutral pH stone cleaner that has been specially designed for the purpose. Never use any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning products on a granite surface as they can cause damage. 

HOW BIG IS A SLAB OF GRANITE?

A full slab of granite can be as large as 45-60 square feet, with slabs measuring around 9-10 feet in width and 5-6 feet in height. When you buy granite tiles, however, you’ll find that their sizes are far more manageable – we stock granite floor tiles measuring up to a maximum of 24” x 24”.
