WHAT IS A LARGE FORMAT CERAMIC TILE?

A large format ceramic tile is widely considered to be a square or rectangular tile, measuring at least eight inches or more on one side. Over the years these larger options of tile have grown and now range from 48” x 48”, 39” x 59” and 39” x 39”  all the way up to a gargantuan 60” x 60”.

HOW TO CUT LARGE FORMAT CERAMIC TILES.

Large format ceramic tiles can’t be cut with a snap tile cutter as the risk of breakage or chipping is too high. As with thicker tiles or natural stone, marble or porcelain, it is recommended to use a wet tile saw. This works well as a DIY project with tiles at the lower end of the large format range. For larger tiles that can be unwieldy, it is a project for two sets of hands, or an experienced professional.

HOW DO YOU LAY LARGE FORMAT CERAMIC WALL TILES?

Prepare the surface by ensuring there are no bumps and holes. Surfaces need to be flat to create a strong bond with tiles due to their rigidity. Choose your tile pattern layout and measure the room from end to end to find your mid-point. Place your tile to check that your layout doesn’t leave slim strips at both ends, as this can look imbalanced with larger tiles. Adjust your layout as needed to create more balanced cuts at either end of the room. 

Spread the adhesive onto the wall with a trowel, and then use the notched edge to comb in grooves that aid adhesion. Then back-butter the tile you are applying to guarantee excellent coverage and a strong bond. Tile suction cups and an extra helper can make the difference when lifting larger tiles into place. When set, apply grout as with a smaller tile, allow it to dry and then wipe away any excess.
