SUBWAY TILE WALL – EMBRACE HIDDEN SPACES

Most rooms can benefit from a subway tile wall. Kitchens and bathrooms immediately spring to mind. Yet subway tiles can make a stunning wall for porches and entryways in a gentle nod to the Victorians. It’s a practical solution for spaces where people come and go with dirty feet, wet clothes, and muddy dogs.

A half-tiled wall can add so much color and style to these often forgotten yet well-used places. Consider how much light you have and the view your entryway gives onto other rooms when choosing your color, to keep it light, bright, and stylish. This way, your entryway becomes a seamless conduit into the rest of your home.

Subway tiled walls are also a nice way to boost neglected spaces like the pantry or laundry room. Why not bring some small pleasures to your day by upgrading these hard-working but uninspiring places? If you’re lucky enough to have a big, bright laundry room, give it the same care and attention you give your kitchen.

A busy family spends a lot of time in there, so it is well worth the investment. Install some sturdy yet elegant floating shelves against a subway tiled wall to hold products, pegs and a few potted plants for a more homely feel. White tiles, or the ever-popular soft grays and ivory tones, will calm the innate messy chaos of the room without competing for your attention.

SUBWAY TILED BATHROOM WALLS – GET CREATIVE

A large space with good light is the perfect opportunity to play with stronger colors or bold patterns. There are so many options available for water-resistant tile to create a striking focal point in your shower spaces. Making the most of a subway tile shower wall can be a great way to inject your personality and style ideals into an otherwise bland room.

In a small wet-room style bathroom, aim for a sense of minimalist luxury. Place larger plain tiles all around the room in a soothing neutral, then use a polished marble subway tile or opulent mosaic to make a real feature of the back wall of the shower space. This will create a feeling of opulent seclusion—somewhere you will want to go to unwind.

White schemes are ever-popular for bathrooms, but give it some luxury and texture with some pale limestone subway tiles, as close to white as you can get. These tiles with their gentle mottling, will give you ample subtle hues to work with in your accessories and paintwork. But if you really want to go for gold, and grab attention, make a high contrast shower wall with one of our brushed metals or matte golds while keeping the rest of the bathroom lighter, textured, and sedate.

HOW TO GROUT SUBWAY TILE SHOWER WALLS

Firstly, make sure you have a good quality, water-resistant grout. One with antimicrobial protection is ideal, as it will help to guard against mold and mildew staining, which is all too common in steamy shower spaces. Once you are satisfied the tiles are properly set, and you have removed all the plastic spacers, take a small amount of grout at a time on your grout float, or spreader, and holding it at a 45-degree angle to the wall, spread the grout across the tile to fill the gaps. Leave the grout to set for 15 to 30 minutes, before wiping away any excess with a sponge soaked in water.

HOW TO APPLY SUBWAY TILE TO WALLS

The matter of how to put subway tile on walls can be daunting for DIY newbies. Grouting can be a satisfying job to do yourself, learning a new skill along the way and taking pride in a job well done. You can buy grout mix in bags that you prepare for use at home by adding water. It is important to make only usable quantities at a time, as it dries very quickly. We recommend a ready-made grout as it will provide a consistent viscosity between tubs, unlike mixing your own, where it is possible to add too little or too much water, which effects the consistency and can dilute the color.

HOW TO FINISH SUBWAY TILE EDGES ON WALL
