LARGE FORMAT EXTERIOR TILE – INDULGE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES

Our range of large format exterior tiles can be used for commercial or residential projects such as patios, decks, walls and building facades. Whenever you are tiling outdoors such as balconies and patios there will always be temperature and moisture considerations. Not only will you want to install a tile, in most instances, that will minimize the risk of slipping, but also installing tile to withstand weather changes and freeze-thaw cycles. Outdoor tile should have a maximum porosity of 3% on average, and even less in areas of harsh weather. If a tile is less absorbent, the less risk there is of the tile failing. Porcelain is less that 0.5% porous making it a go-to choice for many.

Whether for walls or floors, another thing to consider is the way tiles absorb heat from the sun and naturally expand, with darker stones heating more than lighter stone, and contract on cooling. Rain showers can cause rapid contractions, so an outdoor installation needs to withstand these changes over time. It is recommended, particularly in wall cladding, to incorporate movement joints every 8-12 feet. These are slightly wider joints of flexible sealant like silicone caulk that absorb the pressure of these types of movements within the tiles.

For tiled balconies, patios, and porches, bear in mind that you want water to drain away from the building to avoid ingress during heavy rainfall. This can be achieved by installing a waterproof membrane, installing flashing, and laying the tile at a quarter inch incline away from the property.

LARGE FORMAT EXTERIOR PORCELAIN TILE HAS MANY BENEFITS

Large format exterior porcelain tile is an excellent choice for outdoor projects, particularly for flooring in moister climes. Porcelain has a porosity of less than 0.5 per cent meaning it won’t absorb water to a high degree, causing tile to become slippery. From an aesthetic point of view, it makes it harder for mosses to take hold, helping to keep the finish of your project pristine for longer.

Large format porcelain exterior tiles can also be a strategic choice for your installation. While a wet tile cutter is an absolute must for real stone tiles, if you are laying and cutting tile yourself, hiring a large manual cutter is all that is needed to get a nice clean break on your tiles.
